Who I am
Born in 1988, Richard Blackwood was raised in Rosedale, New York by Jamaican born parents. Growing up, he was a soccer fanatic and played for the town soccer club, the Rosedale Rockets. In addition to being a varsity soccer player in high school, he joined the school’s Drama Club and Latin Dance Troupe. He considered it a privilege to perform in various plays such as You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown, 12 Angry Men and Frosty the Snowman. Performances with the Latin Dance Troupe included various cultural events and competitions around New York City. It was not all fun and games as Richard knew the importance of giving back to his community. As a teen, he volunteered in the Emergency Registration Unit at NewYork–Presbyterian Hospital, Queens and New York Cares Coat Drive. During high school summer breaks, he worked as a camp counselor at Queens College day camp.
After high school, Richard went on to pursue an International Business degree at Saint Peter’s University. During his college years, he continued to pursue his love of the Arts training at Broadway Dance Center where he focused on Hip-Hop and Street Jazz. He has choreographed for the Saint Peter’s Hip Hop dance team where they showcased their talents at various sporting and cultural events.
